500 Horses 06:54
The temptress speaks with tongues of gold We hear her wail we hear her call Over mountains and over the plains Passing palaces reduced to ruins And ruins reduced to ashes 500 horses Take me to the garden of Hesperides 500 horses 500 horses They say a holy man is holed up inside the barracks Yes the barracks behind the abattoir A good soldier was he endured the injustices of the flesh And Solomon's blind rage 500 horses Take me to the garden of Hesperides 500 horses 500 horses Drown out the background noise of anguish I don't ask for secrets for holy knowledge I am too small to comprehend All I ask for is let me be ready to go When Ereshkigal comes calling 500 horses Take me to the garden of Hesperides 500 horses 500 horses

Whalebone 03:57
Some say it's an omen A sign of things to come Some say it's simply what happens When the carcass rots to the bone Some say Jonah didn't mind The inside of the whale Some say the whale delivers The Drowning soldier to his home shore Whalebone, Whalebone, Whalebone, Whalebone Some say Ahab had a moral fever And Ishmael was filled with doubt Queequeg, you noble savage comes and sing with me: Whalebone, Whalebone, Whalebone, Whalebone Look into his sad wise eyes He pitties us For he knows What we cannot know Turn around cause not everyone's ready for Whalebone Whalebone, Whalebone, Whalebone, Whalebone

The skies turn red the children cry O nation of the blind Your home is the slaughterhouse All of god's creatures born to die All of god's creatures born to die The lion's bowels, the serpent's tongue Oh elder whitnes is too young Cruel beauty the odor of death All of god's creatures born to die All of god's creatures born to die The darkness of disease The fire of frustration My prophecies are not of the healing kind All of god's creatures born to die All of god's creatures born to die Why why the river keept on turning Tell me why, why is it so Cruel beauty The odor of death can wait Tomorow’s gonna be too late Please dont faith All of god's creatures born to die All of god's creatures born to die Why why tell my why is it so Tell me why, why is it so

Never mind it’s wood it’s pine We won’t have to check it at no River Or Beg a song for another chance The grieving woman can’t talk or dance - she’s holding the glory - knows the coming and goin’ - she knows the story calling her name You changed the story but i wrote the book Soon everybody’s gonna have another look You changed the story but i wrote the book You gonna pay for everything you took I wrote a book that holds this story Water is what makes the river stay Pointing east or pointing west Thats not my way to pray No shifting wind, no trouble mind No shifting wind, no trouble mind No shifting trough holy water or cheap wine You changed the story but i wrote the book Soon everybody’s gonna have another look You changed the story but i wrote the book You gonna pay for everything you took

The rivers over floating Down here where i am The rain keeps on pouring I can’t get in to Town I guess i start on walking Before the morning comes I’ll be there tomorrow With my chosen one The rivers over floating Down here where i am The rain keeps on pouring I can’t get in to Town The miles don't seem too many Thinkin' of your charms And pleasures unlike any Wrapped up in your arms The rivers over floating Down here where i am The rain keeps on pouring I can’t get in to Town

There is no life within the laws of man There is no life within the laws of man Sink or swim if you can There is no life within the laws of man There is no purpose to be found In buy and sell Who is right who is wrong And who can tell? You said it was a war worth fighting There is no life within the laws of man It is true that I ran And now I'm hiding I soiled the flag brought disgrace to all Nothing but a wretch backsliding Now I'm standing before man's tribunal There is no life within the laws of man I raise a hand and swear: I'm done rhyming! To hell with man all flags And golden bells chiming To hell with man all flags And golden bells chiming There is no life within the laws of man There is no life within the laws of man There is no life within the laws of man There is no life within the laws of man

Wonder & wander Drift & roam Up to the gate Up to the gate Say as you will Do as you please Up to the gate Up to the gate Leave your mark Ignite the spark Up to the gate Up to the gate Go where you will And never ask Up to the gate Up to the gate Sow your seeds & own the world Gold, land, oxen & ass Up to the gate Up to the gate Rob & plunder Rant & rage Until you reach the place Where all dues in full are paid Rob & plunder Rant & rage Until you reach the place Where all dues in full are paid At the gate At the gate At the gate.

When the end shows its face And you finally know your place And realize it wasn't all as bad As you thought Fare thee well, friend Fare thee well Now you have to let it all go Produce a smile Let that little boat row You out to sea Out to sea Fare thee well, friend Fare thee well Marie, she will miss you But time will let her heal The boys will raise their glasses in your honor Now and then Fare thee well, friend Fare thee well Many came before Many will follow There's but one rule in love and death Eventually, it'll take us all Fare thee well, friend Fare thee well The rain begins to fall As the horizon swallows you whole At your favorite spot We'll lay down a solitary flower So fare thee well, friend Fare thee well Fare thee well.

Amara terra 03:58

I'm a poor wayfaring stranger Well Traveling through this world above There's no sickness, no toil or danger In that bright world to where I go I'm going there to see my father And all my loved ones, when i come I’m only going over Jordan I'm only going over home I know dark clouds will hang 'round me I know my way is rough and steep Yet beauteous fields just arise before me Where God's redeemed their vigils keep I'm going there to see my mother She said she'd meet me when I come So i'm only going over Jordan I'm only going over home I'll soon be free from every trial This form should rest then if some I'll drop this cross of self denial And enter that home with God I'm going home to see my savior I'll going home no more to run I'm just goin' over jordan I'm just goin' over home

about

Alain Croubalian (1964-2021) passed away shortly after the recording of this album. With his music he takes us on his last journey. For many years he has recorded and performed incomparable songs with his fellow musicians. We as a label were extremely lucky to be able to work with such great musicians and to gain their trust. Together with them we have been able to release some of the best Swiss recordings since 1999.
Regarding the recordings, Alain passed away before mixing the songs, which he created in close collaboration with his poet partner Marc Littler. The original song material was selected, partially edited and mixed by Bertrand Siffert together with Resli Burri.
This last wonderful LP by the Dead Brothers is now available and the cover was designed by Luc Navette.
"Wayfaring Stranger" was the last song the Dead Brothers ever recorded and was placed at the end of the album at the request of the bereaved, which was not originally intended.
The Dead Brothers started out as a funeral chapel and have now grown into one. In the course of their work they have inspired many musicians and bands worldwide (The Dresden Dolls, Gogol Bordello etc)

about

The Dead Brothers Switzerland

Legend has it that The Brothers recently gathered in a remote Swiss mountain village and fueled by wicked wine and strong spirits, cut a disk that merges the worlds of Richard Wagner, Dashiell Hammet and Georges Brassens.
It will not take long for the analysts to enter the scene and ask:
Is it Jazz?
Is it Blues?
Is it Avantgarde folk?
Or is it simply Rock ‘n’ Roll?
The answer is: YES!
